Odoo 20: an ERP of your own — point of sale, stock and invoices in one place

Odoo

An ERP of your own — point of sale, stock and invoices in one place

Selling at the counter, then counting stock by hand, then typing the invoice into another program: Odoo, the open-source ERP, keeps all of that in one place. Running your own usually means renting a server, setting up a database and remembering to back it up. On Erawan you press one button and set the admin password, and a few minutes later Odoo is waiting at its own address.

Rather not set it up yourself? Erawan sets up Odoo for free on Hobby and above.

What Odoo does for a shop

Selling at the counter, counting stock, sending invoices, ordering from suppliers: many shops do these in separate programs, and some of it still lives in a notebook. Odoo is an open-source ERP that keeps them in one place. Sell at the counter and the stock goes down by itself, and the invoice comes from the same sale.

Each job is an app you switch on separately. A shop that only needs a till and stock turns on those two, and adds the online shop the day it wants one.

What Erawan sets up for you

Odoo needs a server that is always on, a database, somewhere to keep files, and enough care that you would trust it with your prices and your customers. On Erawan those come with the app.

  • A database of the app's own, shared with no one, that can be restored to any point in the last 7 days.
  • Product photos and attachments on the app's own disk, kept through every deploy.
  • An admin password you set yourself. The app does not install until you have set it.
  • The app's own https address, from the start.

1. Create Odoo

Press this link to create your Odoo. If you have no Erawan account yet, you are taken to sign up first. Odoo needs the Pro plan or above.

2. Set the admin password

After the button, the console opens the app's Variables tab, where one field is waiting: The password you will sign in with. Press Set value and enter something long that you use nowhere else, or let a password manager make it. It is the password you will sign in to Odoo with, and once set it cannot be viewed again, so keep it safe.

Why first? An ordinary Odoo install comes with a user called admin whose password is admin, and until somebody changes it, anyone who opens the address is in your ERP. On Erawan the app waits for your password before it installs, so that default never works.

The first time, Odoo installs itself into its database, which takes a few minutes.

3. Sign in to Odoo

Press Open site and Odoo's sign-in page appears. In Email type admin, not your own email. If the browser fills one in, clear it first. In Password put the password from step 2, then press Log in.

Inside is the Apps screen, with nothing switched on yet. Press Activate only on the jobs the shop really does, such as Point of Sale, Inventory or Invoicing, and Odoo installs that app.

What is free, and what costs extra

This is Odoo Community, the edition Odoo publishes itself, with no licence fee. Anything with an Activate button is yours to use, such as Sales, Point of Sale, Inventory, Invoicing, Purchase, CRM, eCommerce and Website.

Some apps show Upgrade instead, such as Accounting, the full accounting system, and Knowledge, Timesheets and Studio. Those are Odoo Enterprise and licensed by Odoo separately. If the shop only sends invoices and takes payments, Invoicing is enough.

From here on it is Odoo

Adding products, setting sales tax and opening a till session are Odoo's own work, and Odoo's documentation covers them app by app. If it sends you to the Manage Databases page to back up or create a database, that page is switched off: this app has one database, your shop's, and Erawan already backs it up.

What it costs, and what is yours

Odoo runs on the Pro plan, ฿599 a month, a flat price. See every plan

Products, customers and orders are in the app's own database, which can be restored to any minute in the last 7 days. How to ask for that is in Rewind your database to an earlier point. Attachments and product photos are on the app's disk, which is copied every night.

The program is Odoo's, unmodified. Erawan connects the database, the disk and the password you set, and nothing more.

Your own domain

To put Odoo at the shop's own address, such as erp.yourshop.com, add it on the app's Domain name tab. Setting up DNS is in Use your own domain.
